Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Continues Their Environmental Initiatives!

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is committed to leveraging the strength of their organization to mobilize over 120,000 active members, initiating a ripple effect to bring about a substantial change in the environment.

The sorority has publicly declared their intention to utilize specific strategies to enhance their overall capacity and to enhance and safeguard the environment on a larger scale. They commit to giving importance to initiatives that advance the uptake of sustainable and ethical practices, and will back and organize workshops and seminars that motivate and involve individuals and communities in environmentally friendly behaviors to decrease household waste.

The initiative began in 2023 and the Sorority has pledged to expand their efforts! The Washington Informer confirms the progress of their efforts in the following article. This story is part of “Earth Day Every Day,” Word In Black’s series exploring the environmental issues facing Black Americans and the solutions we’re creating in the fight for climate justice.

By the middle of Earth Month 2023, Alpha Kappa Alpha had already planted over 2,500 trees, edging close to its target of 3,100 for April. This endeavor is a component of the sorority's Enhance Our Environment campaign. Upon launching the campaign, Danette Anthony Reed, the international president and CEO of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, informed members of her desire to dedicate the entire month of April to tree planting.

"That meant I wanted them to swap their stilettos for jeans, don gardening gloves, lace up their sneakers, and head out to plant trees," Reed explains. "There is significant impact in tree planting. Recognizing this power, I aimed to find a way to strategize how we could plan for it." For the AKA sorors... adaptation will not be sufficient. Dramatic, immediate mitigation action is needed against every tenth of a degree of warming.
