Research Shows Vikings Were Fond of Beasts, Birds & Green Spaces!



Green Spaces and Animals held a special place in Viking culture. Animals served as revered symbols, companions, and metaphors in Norse mythology and everyday life. Ancient sagas offer insight into the green spaces as doorways to the Gods, knowledge of the mythical world of Viking culture and the symbolism attached to Norse animals.


Viking religious practices revolved around their reverence for nature, and sacred groves played a pivotal role in strengthening the spiritual connection with the natural environment. These groves were seen as sanctuaries where Norse individuals could seek solace, guidance, and divine wisdom. There was no single, organised and institutional religion of the Vikings. As they did not comprise a distinct social entity to begin with, it stands to reason they would not have a distinct set of beliefs and practices.


The paganism seen in the Viking Age varied from region to region, so what people believed in Denmark would be different to Norway and Sweden.In Norse religion, sacred spaces held great significance for both the Vikings and the followers of ancient Norse spirituality. These sacred places were believed to be the gateways to the divine realm, where the gods and spirits resided. They played a crucial role in religious rituals and worship, serving as focal points for spiritual connection and communion.


Sacred places for Vikings were not just physical locations but rather imbued with a sense of holiness and divine presence. They were regarded as channels for communication with the gods and ancestors, where prayers and offerings were made to seek blessings, protection, and guidance. In Norse mythology, the tree of life, Yggdrasil, holds immense significance and represents the connection between all nine realms of the Norse cosmos. Its symbolism goes deep and explores the roots of ancient Norse culture and beliefs.


Green spaces improve mental health by reducing stress and promoting relaxation. They enhance physical health by encouraging outdoor activities and exercise. Green spaces help mitigate climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide and providing cooling effects. Biodiversity thrives in green spaces, supporting ecosystems and wildlife. Green spaces improve air quality by filtering pollutants and producing oxygen.
